Some Gladiators fought with swords, spears, helmets and shields. The more unlucky fought with fishing nets and tridents! However, each gladiator was specialised to fight in these ways by there masters.
Some of the gladiators were volunteers, who were looking to earn a small fortune or looking to escape bankrupcy. Also they were looking for popularity. However, the vast majority of the gladiators were prisoners of war or slaves.
